Welcome to Landfield Avenue Synagogue
Dear Friends
Welcome to Landfield Avenue Synagogue — The Historic Centerpiece of Traditional Ashkenazic Judaism in Sullivan County!
Our storied history is indeed a reflection of the roots of Judaism in Sullivan County; a history that dates back over a century encompassing an era when ambitious expansion of the region morphed the countryside into one of the premier tourist attractions in the world due in great part to the migration of “Jewish Farmers” to the Catskills.
While their success in building businesses that ranged from retail shops to sprawling resorts played a significant role in the economy of this rural region the generations of “owner/operators” never lost sight of the importance of maintaining their identity as Jews.
These men and women made certain that each and every town and village had a synagogue and, as such, the county saw buildings ranging in size from “one room sanctuaries” to large and magnificent structures.
These congregations practiced a traditional Ashkenazic Judaism that carried their belief and commitment from Eastern Europe.
These congregations ranged in size from a few dozen to a few hundred and became Jewish centerpieces in their communities amplifying the strength of commitment to Judaism.
As we enter the second quarter of the 21st century; as the 538 hotels and 1500 bungalow colonies fell
victim to changing lifestyles, the one single constant that remains is the strength of our religious commitment.
Landfield Avenue Synagogue is OUR shul - it is our home, yours and mine and we, all of us together, must continue to engender that sense of Jewish tradition, indeed a tradition not exclusive to us as Jews, but a tradition that transcends all religions - the tradition of “Family!”
Please join us, as family, to actively participate, first and foremost, in prayer at YOUR Landfield Avenue Synagogue!
Our weekly “Shabbat Sheet” provides a synopsis of the weekly Parsha as well as schedules of other activities that LAS sponsors.
I look forward to greeting you and davening with you!
Welcome Home!
